Piano Instruction

“Life is like a piano. What you get out of it depends on how you play it.”

-Tom Lehrer

Maybe your preschooler plinks out notes on her rainbow-colored keyboard, or perhaps your pre-teen has expressed an interest in playing more than “Chopsticks” — and to be honest, you wouldn’t mind a little variety on the home piano, either.

Whatever your reason for wanting your child to play the piano, Music Potpourri instructor Therese Bertrand takes her students from wanting to learn to learning to love the instrument that has powered musical greatness for centuries.

Ages 4-7

When you pour your child’s energy and creativity into learning piano, you give him or her lifelong benefits like higher self-esteem, better concentration and coordination, improved communication and problem solving skills, and an outlet for relaxation and self expression. Plus, it’s fun! You will attend with your child, becoming partner in their education.

Ages 8-17

Music Potpourri’s unique approach to piano instruction means your 8-17 year old definitely won’t get bored. Integrating how-to instruction with ear training and music theory — and participating in a combination of individual and group sessions each month — enhances learning and makes piano instruction a challenging and anticipated part of their week.

How it Works

At Music Potpourri, you can expect 16 individual sessions per term. Your instruction will also include up to two 45-minute group sessions per month. Group sessions add a layer of accountability — and fun! There is an option of adding additional summer sessions at no additional charge.

Parents or guardians are expected to attend:

  • private sessions with their child(ren) to provide continuity and enhance at-home learning

  • the “mini-recital” portion of each group lesson

Guidelines from National Guild are followed. Once students are familiar with reading notes on the printed staff (one to two terms), the main curriculum used is Royal Conservatory of Music which is a comprehensive, sequential and effective method for any age. Other repertoire is supplemented, depending on the student’s learning style.

Prior to beginning instruction at Music Potpourri, the parent will meet with instructor Therese Bertrand to discuss goals and expectations and ensure a proper fit and successful learning partnership.
